Women’s Study Resumes Wednesday

After a long break we are excited to have the Women’s Study resume this Wednesday @ Trish’s house from 7-9pm.

Idol’s of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone” by Elyse Fitzpatrick  will be the book of choice this time.

Many people desire to live godly lives but feel trapped in habitual sins. They trip over the same bad habit, embarrassing weakness, or sinful slavery they wanted to be free of years ago. This book reveals that idolatry lies at the heart of every besetting sin.

If you think of idols as stone statues in far-off lands, think again. Idols are the desires, longings, and expectations we worship instead of the true God. Elyse Fitzpatrick helps uncover hidden idols.

We have ordered and received the books already for the study. If you’d like a book please bring $10 to the Women’s Study Wednesday night and we’ll have your copy ready for you.

Book Table: 18 New Books

We will have the following 18 new books for sale at our book table starting this Sunday (remember that all books are sold at the price that we got them for [many times cheaper than the list price] and are all approved by the church leadership and, we pray, are for you to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ):

The Glory of Christ by John Owen

No man shall ever behold the glory of Christ by sight hereafter, who doth not in some measure behold it by faith here in this world.” - John Owen

In The Glory of Christ, abridged and made easy to read by R. J. K. Law, we have the great Puritan pastor and theologian John Owen at his richest and most mature. This is really one of the best books in existence. A Chrsitocentric treatment of the gospel. Not only is it soundly theological, but extremely practical for growth in grace and truth.

Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp

…how to speak to the heart of your child.

The things your child does and says flows from the heart. Luke 6:45 puts it this way, “. . . out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” (NIV) Written for parents with children of any age, this insightful book provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child’s heart into the paths of life.

Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul

Know God perfect plan for His glory and His children

Predestination is a debated topic. Yet the Bible is clear about the doctrine of election and its importance to our perspectives on God and man, and the nature of their contributions to salvation.

Because of the widespread neglect of this doctrine, many people cite Chosen By God not only as their introduction to Dr. Sproul’s teaching, but also as the resource that profoundly shifted their attention to and understanding of the predestining grace of God. R.C. shows how election is entirely compatible with human freedom, dignity, and responsibilty. One of Ligonier’s most significant and popular books, Chosen by God shows why all serious Christians cannot afford to ignore this important biblical doctrine, but instead should embrace God’s initiative in Salvation.

Just Do Something: A Liberating Approach to Finding God’s Will by Kevin DeYoung

or “How to Make a Decision Without Dreams, Visions, Fleeces, Open Doors, Random Bible Verses, Casting Lots, Liver Shivers, Writing in the Sky, etc.”

Hyper-spiritual approaches to finding God’s will just don’t work. It’s time to try something new: give up.

Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung counsels Christians to settle down, make choices, and do the hard work of seeing those choices through.

Too often, he writes, God’s people jump from church to church, workplace to workplace, relational circle to relational circle, worrying that they haven’t found God’s perfect will for their lives.

But God doesn’t need to tell us what to do at each fork in the road. He’s already revealed His plan for our lives: to love Him with our whole hearts, to obey His Word, and after that, to do what we like.

No need for hocus-pocus. No reason to be directionally challenged. Just do something.

Justification by Francis Turretin

Does faith alone justify? This and nine other questions are answered in this classic, seventeenth-century analysis of the doctrine of justification.

Martin Luther contended that the church stands or falls on the doctrine of justification. With challenges to the Reformer’s view coming from several directions today, R.C. Sproul find the appearance of Francis Turretin’s Justification “a welcome relief”.

Is the ground of our justification “the righteousness of Christ in us or the righteousness of Christ for us?” In the introduction, Sproul finds Turretin (1623-1687) to be “at his best” when addressing this key issue.

Justification addresses ten questions, beginning with “Is the word justification always used in a forensic sense in this argument; or is it also used in a moral and physical sense?”

God, Marriage, and Family: Rebuilding the Biblical Foundation by Andreas J. Kostenberger with David W. Jones

We live in a time of crisis regarding marriage and the family, and only by a return to the biblical foundation can these institutions be rebuilt. To provide an integrated, biblical treatment of the full range of marriage and family issues, the authors of God, Marriage, and Family examine what Scripture says about God’s purposes for humans in their marriage and family interactions. Their examination covers the special issues stemming from marriage, childrearing, singleness, homosexuality, and divorce and remarriage. With study questions and… Read More…

The Attributes of God by A.W. Pink

Talks about 17 attributes of God

The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts.

The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink

…lays Scripture end to end to prove God’s control over all persons and events.

Arthur W. Pink (d. 1953) is noted for his independent thinking. He was so well read, and had such a photographic memory, that he could give you the page and column in a host of reference works and commentaries. This book shocked the Christian world in 1919 when he first published it. He fiercely defends the sovereignty of God, and all the cognate doctrines such as the Doctrines of Grace. It is THE book to give to those just after conversion, and a prime book to give to anyone who defends the free will of man.

This book may be overwhelming, but it is certain that its many printings have been used of God to convince people of His sovereignty. His doctrinal belief is that that God both elects and reprobates, as Romans 9:21-23 clearly teaches. It is an important stone to guide the steps of those who are not yet convinced of God’s absolute sovereignty over all persons and events.

Plus the following 10 different Pocket Puritan Paperbacks:

Am I A Christian? by James Fraser

James Fraser endured a long conflict with doubts. This little book, taken from his memoirs (Memoirs of the Rev. James Fraser of Brea, found in Scottish Puritans: Select Biographies, Volume Two), is a helpful record of how he overcame his fears, and arrived at a firm assurance of his salvation in Christ.

Anger Management by Richard Baxter

Anger is God’s good gift to help us resist all that is wrong. But anger may itself be sinful. Richard Baxter gives valuable and practical advice on how to recognize and overcome this sinful anger in all its forms. Adapted and paraphrased from Richard Baxter’s Christian Directory by Richard Rushing.

Binge Drinking by John Flavel

Often considered a modern phenomenon, binge drinking is in fact an age-old problem. John Flavel, a puritan minister in the naval port of Dartmouth, England, pulls no punches as he confronts the sin of drunkenness head on. Flavel’s treatment is a highly relevant exposé of the soul-destroying evils of this ‘detestable sin.’

Heaven: A World of Loveby Jonathan Edwards

According to Jonathan Edwards, heaven will be a world of holy love. God himself is the source of this love, and in heaven he will impart it perfectly to all his people. Edwards unfolds the nature, expression, effects, and enjoyment of this best of all the gifts God ever bestows on those who believe. From Jonathan Edwards’ .

Impure Lust by John Flavel

John Flavel faithfully and powerfully applies the warnings of Scripture against sexual immorality. He exposes both its truly horrid nature and frightening consequences, before giving sound advice on how to avoid the snares of sexual sin, and how to escape if ensnared. From Flavel’s The Harlot’s Face in the Scripture-Glass.

Living Faith by Samuel Ward

Samuel Ward explains the immense value of faith, not only as the gateway to salvation and life everlasting, but as the key to a joyful and triumphant life in this present world. In every sense Christians should be those who live by their faith. Adapted and paraphrased from The Sermons of Samuel Ward, by Richard Rushing.

Repent and Believe by Thomas Brooks

The Puritans believed in the reality of the devil and in his deadly antagonism to the souls of men. To keep us in our lost and condemned state he employs two devices against us: he persuades us that repentance is easy and believing in Christ is impossible. Brooks masterfully uncovers Satan’s devices and skilfully prescribes the Bible’s remedies against them.

Sinful Speech by John Flavel

The ancients believed that there were as many sins of the tongue as letters in the alphabet, while the Apostle James described the tongue as ‘a world of iniquity’. The Puritan preacher, John Flavel, was often grieved by the language used by professing Christians. Here he warns against several forms of sinful speech and points to the Spirit’s ‘excellent way to season our words, and keep them sweet and sound… (Col. 4:6).’

United We Stand by Thomas Brooks

In his constant warfare against the church the devil loves nothing better than to sow the seeds of discord and division. The Puritan Thomas Brooks lamented, “Our own woeful experience is too great a proof of this.” How can we counter this devilish ploy? Brooks outlines a twelve-point action plan and teaches us that United We Stand, Divided We Fall is a fitting motto for every Christian soldier.

When Christians Suffer by Thomas Case

Thomas Case, a prisoner of the Lord during dark days for the gospel in England, believed that ‘Discourses on affliction can never be out of season . . . Providence has so ordered that whosoever will follow the Lord fully like Caleb (Num. 14:24) will be exposed to the world’s hatred, but the glorious Spirit will rest upon them (1 Pet. 4:14).’ With persuasive arguments drawn from God’s Word and verified by his own experience, he convinces us that God’s rod and God’s love may stand together, for ‘the Lord disciplines those he loves’. Here is sweet comfort for all of Christ’s cross-bearing disciples.

This past Sunday Pastor Emilio preached from 1 John 3:16-24 a sermon titled, “How God’s Children Love, are Assursed, and Obey”.

During his first point we learned that Christian love is rooted in the gospel, that we love because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:19), in the 3 minute clip below Emilio explains what it means to lay down our life:

Jesus, With Thy Church Abide + 3 New Songs

We opened up our first service for this new year the same way we opened up our very first worship service together as a church, by praying together to God, by song, for help. The song we sang is called “Jesus, With Thy Church Abide” (and I [Jason Delgado] took the liberty to put the lyrics into first person so it makes it more of a prayer from the church to God). Jesus, with Thy Church Abide

Original Lyrics: Thomas B. Pollock (1871)
Edited Lyrics: Jason Delgado (2007)
Music: Christopher Miner (1997)

Jesus, with Thy church abide;

Be our Savior, Lord, and Guide,

While on earth our faith is tried:

We beseech Thee, hear us,

We beseech Thee, hear us.

-

Keep our life and doctrine pure;

Grant us patience to endure,

Trusting in Thy promise sure:

We beseech Thee, hear us,

We beseech Thee, hear us.

-

May we one in doctrine be,

One in truth and charity,

Winning all to faith in Thee:

We beseech Thee, hear us,

We beseech Thee, hear us.

-

Raise us to our calling high,

Let the nations far and nigh,

Hear Thy heralds’ warning cry:

We beseech Thee, hear us,

We beseech Thee, hear us.

-

May our lamp of truth be bright,

Help us bear aloft its light,

Through the realms of heathen night:

We beseech Thee, hear us,

We beseech Thee, hear us.

-

Often sorrow, often woe,

onward Christian, onward go!

Children of God: The Who, When, & How

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us,

that we should be called children of God!…

- 1 John 3:1

This past Sunday Pastor Emilio preached from 1 John 3:1-3 and gave us the who, when, and the how of the children of God:

  • Who are the children of God?
    • They are regenerate
    • They are adopted
    • They are sojourners
  • When will they be known?
    • Already and not yet
  • How should the child of God live then?
    • With a Christ-centered hope
    • With a Christ-centered purity
      • How do we purify ourselves?
        • Identify what is explicitly sinful
        • Seek to give ourselves to righteous things

In explaining 1 John 3:2 about when the children of God will be know, Pastor Emilio talked about a theological term called “Already and Not Yet”. Hear his explanation of this term:

How Should We View Christian Ministers?

This past Sunday Pastor Jay preached from 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 and gave us 4 ways in which we should view Christian ministers.

We should view our ministers as…

  1. Slaves/Servants
  2. Stewards
  3. Those who are required to be faithful
  4. Those who will ultimately be judge by God

In expounding point 2, the question is raised- “Stewards of what?” Stewards of the mystery- “What mystery?” Pastor Jay explains in the 6 minute clip below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Judge not lest ye be judgedIn expounding on point 4, Pastor Jay tackled the question, “Should we not judge at all?” What about the verse that says “Judge NOT?” (Matthew 7:1). If we are to judge how can we judge rightly and what is a unrighteous judgment? How about when people don’t have the same theology or methodology as we do (i.e. Calvinism, expository preaching, ect…) [listen below, 6 minutes:]

God’s Wisdom vs. the World’s (diametrically opposed)

When Christians unto carnal men give ear, Out of their way they go, and pay for ’t dear, For master Worldly-Wiseman can but show, A Saint the way to Bondage and to woe.“When Christians unto carnal men give ear,

Out of their way they go, and pay for ’t dear,

For master Worldly-Wiseman can but show,

A Saint the way to Bondage and to woe.”

Yesterday, Pastor Jay gave 4 reasons why we are to reject the world’s wisdom. One of the reasons was because God’s wisdom & the world’s wisdom are diametrically opposed (listen below, under 3 minutes):

Finally Alive

What does the Bible teach about the miracle of rebirth?

In this book John Piper explores Jesus’ peculiar command, “You must be born again.”

When Jesus told Nicodemus, he had to be born again, this devout religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It seems nothing has changed. Today “born again Christians” fill churches that are ineffectual at best and sometimes even nonchristian.

The term “born again” has lost its meaning for many. Those claiming to be “born again” live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don’t; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, do almost everything the same.

Being “born again” shouldn’t be defined by what people say they believe. It should be defined by Jesus.

“When Jesus said to Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life… If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive.” John Piper

Portrait of Calvin

This Desiring God reprint of T.H.L. Parker’s classic 1954 biography commemorates the 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth in 1509.

Calvin’s words and life point beyond himself to where the crucified and risen Christ sits at the right hand of God. Before he died, he saw to it that there should be no posthumous canonization. He left orders that he should be buried in an unmarked grave. So his death and burial were of one piece with his life. Calvin bent all his energies in life and death to making Jesus Christ alone great, and making that greatness visible.

In his foreword, John Piper writes, “I am eager for people to know Calvin not because he was without flaws, or because he was the most influential theologian of the last 500 years (which he was), or because he shaped Western culture (which he did), but because he took the Bible so seriously, and because what he saw on every page was the majesty of God and the glory of Christ.”

This Momentary Marriage

A Parable of Permanence
Reflecting on forty years of matrimony, John Piper exalts the biblical meaning of marriage:

Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. And ultimately, marriage is the display of God. It displays the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his people to the world in a way that no other event or institution does. Marriage, therefore, is not mainly about being in love. It’s mainly about telling the truth with our lives. And staying married is not about staying in love. It is about keeping covenant and putting the glory of Christ’s covenant-keeping love on display.

This Momentary Marriage unpacks this biblical vision, with all of its unexpected contours and weighty implications, for married and single folk alike.
